About Karla Russell

Biography

Born and educated through high school in Detroit Michigan, Karla Y. Russell, was made aware of tough urban social issues facing children. At age five, Russell knew she wanted to be an educator like several in her maternal family. Although her “middle class” parent’s efforts to protect her and her siblings from Detroit’s urban challenges, she related and empathized with the challenges her peers in the neighborhood experienced.

Russell has attended colleges in Michigan, Indiana (with husband and family members), Georgia, Tennessee, and Cambridge Massachusetts. She balanced family life while obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Special Education and Master's of Education in Curriculum & Instruction with the emphasis in Conflict Resolution. Seeing the need for knowledge to better serve the 21st century students and her community, Russell studied Counseling for Alcohol and Substance Abuse (didn’t matriculate) but she's currently learning from experienced elders and like-minded organizations to learn more ways to engage her community in culturally sensitive and relevant Social Emotional Learning (S.E.L.) with Restorative Justice to address other needs in our schools, families, life skill needs in our urban communities and empowerment of citizens in our political environment.

After living almost three years in Washington DC & Maryland, spending time with her eldest daughter, Russell gained more certification and experiences in private and charter schools then gladly returned to Atlanta. Russell just retired from 33 years of full-time teaching on her birthday in January 2022. Education is her passion despite the inequities and conspiracy to keep our minority teachers and youth at the mercy of status quo, poverty, and racism in America.

Russell's philosophy on education is three-fold: Family/Culture centered, Reading focus and Independence from status quo education institutions. Education starts with parents, the family and community leaders (“Village”). She's believe we must increase collaborations with community & non-profit organizations to teach parenting skills and help with childcare to allow single mom’s time to self-improve. A “brain-drain” exists because most of our educators and innovators are tempted to work for education and government systems that do not serve or honor African American educators’ gifts nor natural abilities and talents of our youth. My philanthropic endeavors are to give back to my community with respect to my personal strengths. She promotes emphasis on developing individual strengths, artistic talents, and entrepreneurial motivations.

Raising Our Own Through Schooling

Philanthropists and Educators collaborate to find best actions for youth services.

Proven Results

After teaching for 33 years, Russell has developed relationships with educators and mentors that help with her dream of giving back. She, in turn supports veteran teachers by substituting to decrease some staff shortages and allow for days to take care of themselves and family. We help young educators by mentoring them and learning new ways from them as they hone their craft. We are the apple CORE: Community of Reformative Educators (REAT Inc.) We believe in the proverb "It takes a Village to raise a child." Our Mission at Russell's Education Advocate and Tutoring Inc., a 501C3 Non-Profit Business is committed to educating and mentoring youth while at the same time, providing needed support for their caregivers and educators to decrease illiteracy.
